Hair transplant complications and prevention
Hair Transplant Complications are often followed by a hair restoration. These complications are the result of many factors. First of all, let’s discuss the meaning of a complication. It is defined as a medical problem followed by the treatment of a disease. This may or may not be related to the disease at times. Therefore, before a person is to receive or opt for a treatment, he/she is warned of the side effects. This is done so by the surgeon who is to operate on the patient. Some precautions could also be recommended to the patient to reduce or eliminate the risk of these side effects.
Hair transplant complications firstly
include the complication of pain in the surgery. This occurs when FUT is performed. To get rid of the pain NSAID is prescribed to
the patient. The secondly is oedema which develops due to tumescent anaesthesia
and trauma during the transplant. To prevent oedema the patient is made to lay
in such a way so as to eliminate the risk of it. Thirdly is Asymmetry. It is
caused when a false or improper design of the frontal hairline is marked. This
will lead to disapproved results once the surgery is over. Fourthly, scarring
is an issue when the hair restoration surgery is done with FUT specifically.
The appearance of the scar can however be reduced by micro-pigmentations.
Fifthly we have crusting which may occur on the dry epidermis surrounding the
bleeding area after 24-48 hours of the surgery. Sixthly is graft dislodgement
which occurs in the initial 3 days after the operation. The main cause of graft
dislodgement is direct trauma. Seventhly hiccups may develop. However, this is
rare and unusual and only lasts as long as 2 to 3 days. Seventhly, there could
be a possibility of a loss of sensation which is the result of cutting off of a
nerve or multiple nerves by the punch. However, the loss will recover 6-12
months after the surgery. Eighthly we have pruritus which is a condition in
which there is severe itching in the donor or recipient area. Another cause of
this would be the use of minoxidil after the hair restoration surgery. However,
the use of steroids or antihistamines could eliminate this. Lastly, a patient
might develop syncope in which very nervous patients might faint or feel dizzy
during the procedure. Normally our Fue
clinic in Pakistan provides
written information to every patient.
Hair
transplant complications are more when FUT is
performed. In this paragraph, we will discuss the complication specifically
after FUT. To start with firstly we have donor hair effluvium. This may show up
six weeks into the surgery. The main cause of it is anagen effluvium in
response to the interrupted blood supply. Secondly, hypertrophic scar or keloid
are rare complications that occur months or years after surgery and persist
indefinitely. Thirdly we have necrosis. Recipient area necrosis may be a rare
but dangerous complication that arises when an increased number of recipient
grafts are utilized and de-vascularization of the scalp occurs as a result
of the dense splitting of the skin that leads to wound areas.
Due to these problems our hair transplant clinic in
Pakistan switched over to FUE technique as this latest procedure does
not have too many problems.
Hair
Transplant Complications are a part of a surgery. These do not follow or
develop for everyone. They may or may not occur. However, precautions must be
taken beforehand itself. A surgeon or physician must always sit with the
patient before the surgery and educate the patient with all the information he
or she might need to know. This must include all the info about the possible
complications the patient might have to face and deal with in the future. For
this, a face-to-face session must be planned right before the surgery.
